I took the Guard and Constable images from People3, where there are images of a regular soldier and a soldier with a cape. We’ll create three for this scenario: Grandpa York, a Guard, and the Constable. Return to event editing mode to add non-player characters (NPCs). In previous versions of RPG Maker, you had to use “blank” events to do some of those things, but now the layering system works well. After a while, you get good at using layers to add items to tables and shelves. Barred windows, cracks, shelves, weapons for the guards, dirty burlap mattresses in the cells–all those details bring the setting to life. Take some time to explore the tile sets and add details to the room. Tiles are layered this way so that when the prisoner is in the jail cell, he or she can walk up to the door and appear to be standing behind it. How convenient! They are two tiles high, just like our walls. You’ll see a couple tiles that look exactly like a jail cell door. To add cell doors, switch to tileset layer “B” and scroll to the bottom. Why? Because one tile will remain open for the entrance–that’s where the cell door will go. Each cell should also be three tiles in width. Walls are two tiles high, so you have to extend the jail cells to give the prisoners enough room to wander. While doing so, it’s important to keep in mind perspective. Now we have a plain, depressing-looking jail.Īdd jail cells by painting three vertical walls extending down from the back wall. The lighter shade is usually the top view. Every wall has a top view and a side view. Now, because a jail usually has sturdy walls, pick the gray stone wall from tileset layer “A”. Click on an empty floor tile and simply paint over everything in the room except for the walls. In map editing mode, right-clicking on a tile clones whatever is in that tile–convenient for painting over scenery. Select it and press the space bar to edit its general settings. Right-click on Forest Town in the map list, then “Load…”, and then select “Weapon Shop.” You’ll notice a new map pops up at the bottom of the list, identical to the Weapon Shop interior you already have. ![]() The weapons shop interior provides an adequate template. RPG Maker MV comes with several dozen premade locations, but a jail is not one of them. ![]() Today we will be designing the interior of that prison and setting up the main quest. Just to recap the game’s plot, our hero, Lucius York, discovered a letter from his grandpa explaining that he had been arrested for owing rent and sent to debtor’s prison. It should also work importing it to an RPG Maker MZ project to test it out (you can number animated sections of this tile to see the order the tile animation will appear in) This video by Starlit Castle talks a bit about it how the tileset works: If you are confused about what this does and how it works, you can import this template and a RPG Maker MZ A4 sprite sheet into a drawing program, lower the opacity of the template in a separate layer over the A4 sprite sheet and observe. It's hard to explain how it works in written form, so I may end up making a video sometime about it (when I have time). = light blue is an edge of the tile group (can still be tiled, but only in a certain direction) = dark blue is a constantly repeating pattern ![]() = black lines separate the tiles that don't go together (some are animated, while others are static) [Set grid lines to 24x24, even though it's a 48x48 tileset (if it was 16x16 tileset, the gridlines would probably need to be set at 8x8)Ĭolor coding (for squares, and black lines): You can import the image in a drawing program and draw on top of it, or lower the opacity and work under it (may help to delete the squares as you work, so it doesn't hinder your perception of the colors you're working with) (You may be able to shrink and expand it for other tile set sizes?) This is meant for RPG Maker MZ 48x48 A4 tilesets.
